Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2020 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Standing alone, far out of sight of land in Great Lake Superior, Stannard Rock Lighthouse is known as the loneliest place in North America. Perched atop a reef jutting out of 300ft depths Stannard Lighthouse was chiseled out of ice every spring and kept alight through the shipping season to ensure sailors safe passage through the treacherous waters. Lake Superior, being known for its rough waters and unpredictable weather, rarely gives glimpse of the rocks beneath the surface where the lighthouse stands. This photo was taken on the brief calm before a wild storm in July that racked the lake for 2 days following. The ancient rocks that the lighthouse rests atop are the crest of an underwater mountain that have claimed many ships.
