ENTRY DESCRIPTION
A portrait photography session of author Patrick Bassant (1977) for his second novel (2020), ‘De vlinder in de inktpot’(‘The butterfly in the Inkwell’), that is used for its promotional purposes, including the cover photo of his book (photo ‘Author Patrick Bassant I’), and his website. Patrick Bassant studied Dutch literature, and published his first novel (Joy) in 2012 at publisher Wereldbibiotheek. For this book launch, I have created a music video, shot with the iPhone, which started my interest in film and photography. His novel Joy received many positive reviews in Dutch newspapers, and now for his latest novel, the reviews are even more positive. ‘De vlinder in the inktpot’, a novel about the Spanish Civiel War, took seven years to complete, including a huge amount of research time to get acquainted with that time, but also to get to know famous characters such as Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway that take important roles in the storyline.
The photographs were taken near the place I live, in ‘De Jordaan’ at the center of Amsterdam, with nice picturesque characteristics and good photography possibilities. The photos were taken on the street but also in one of the local pubs that Patrick and me occasionally went when we were young: The Soundgarden. Because of the beautiful light and atmosphere, these were actually taken in or near the toilets.
The publisher defined the photos as beautifully totalitarian and thus perfectly suited for the novel.
Since 2012, I have explored photography and film, and currently working on my first feature film.
