The loss of detail, no.18: Amsterdam, Sept.5 2020, Metro 52 by David Zijlstra (Netherlands)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
My series 'The loss of detail' started intuitively with photographing masked people in the public space. What inspired me was the layering of the new street scene, which has something sad, gloomy, terrifying and at the same time a certain beauty in it. As a street photographer, I felt the inner necessity to capture it all, now that it was possible again, after having been inside for months during the lockdown, forced and frustrated. For several months I only photographed people with face masks. There was something obsessive about it (my partner can confirm that). Gradually I chose a conceptual approach instead of a documentary. A development that I chose to show within the series. By making the images moodier and by emphasizing the eyes I want to show the impact and the uncertainties associated with the global crisis.
AUTHOR
I studied photography at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. My photo work has been shown in various museums, my short films at international film festivals, and a few projects have been published in Dutch newspapers. Recently I switched my work area from the photo studio to the streets and changed my method from directed portraits to spontaneous ones in the public space. An artistic change that is still evolving.
