ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Kaziranga National park, nestled by the Brahmaputra river in North Eastern India is an incredibly diverse natural habitat and is home to some of the most fascinating flaura and fauna in the Indian subcontinent.
This particular moment was one of the most special I have witnessed in many years spent in the wild; I was up up on a small embankment beside a pond watching this mother and her young calf. The mother seemed to be giving her calf a lesson on eating the hyacinth - select a lush green bunch, rip them out from the root, pound the stems against their trunk to remove the mud and then swallow whole. I watched the calf gradually perfect this task. Lesson done the mother then proceeded to enter the pond, the calf seemed hesitant at first to follow, I was anxiously waiting to see if the calf would take her first plunge. After several minutes the calf eventually entered the pond, tentatively at first. Every step she took was measured and she kept looking up at her mother who was never too far away – I watched this incredible bond between the two as she kept encouraging her child deeper into the pond.
I captured this moment right when they seemed to have a huge grin on their faces, clearly enjoying themselves!
