Nature: 2nd Place Winner 2020 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The weeks following the passing of my wife were long, painful and full of loss and self pity. I used photography to break me out of this shell of misery, attempting to channel my feelings in to my work. The stormy Irish Sea became my muse. The tempestuous ice cold waters crashed, surged and battered to the coast of the Isle of Man. My only focus was the swell direction and the tides.
The sea was crashing over the promenade defense wall at Peel. I sat and watched. The promenade was closed, but there were little back streets that lead down towards the sea front that were still accessible. I parked my car behind the bench facing the sea. Wondering who it was there for, wondering would the posie of flowers hanging from the side survive the storm. Memorials were more noticeable than they ever had been before, and I could feel the pain, loss and emotion surrounding that bench. During the next 15 minutes, I sat and took a series of waves breaking over the bench, crashing in to the defense wall and soaring upwards.
These images were always going to be black and white to help capture the emotion, the strength and the textures and power of the sea and the sky.
I later found out the bench had been put in place for a 52 year old man called Lude Gell, who had been tragically killed in an accident at work.
