Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2020 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Every fall, sardine form in large concentrations or "baitballs" off of the Pacific coast of Baja, Mexico. Known as the Mexican Sardine Run, this annual event attracts the largest known aggregation of the ocean's third fastest fish, the striped marlin, along with sea lions, sharks, whales, and birds swooping at the surface.
The action is fast and intense, with the sardines swimming frantically to escape, but pinned in all directions by the marlin and sea lions working cooperatively, each taking turns to feed.
