Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2020 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
A magnificent Southern Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) cow with her two to three month old calf in the calm birthing waters off the island of Vavau in the Kingdom of Tonga, South Pacific Ocean. This young calf must surface to breath about every five minutes. Her mother could stay submerged for over forty minutes but when she is nursing a calf she reduces that to surfacing every twenty minutes or so in order to keep an eye on the youngster. Such a precious and special bond between the mother and her well cared for offspring. I was blessed to witness such a gorgeous wild encounter.
