Architecture: Honorable Mention 2021 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
During the pandemic, I took time to explore Los Angeles. Stay-at-home orders meant quieter street and vacant shops and restaurants. Overcast days seemed bleaker, with even fewer people venturing out. My father died at the beginning of the pandemic and my sister passed away in March 2021. Their deaths added to the sorrow of the pandemic. On the days that were difficult emotionally, I drove around the city photographing images that captured the increasing isolation. One autumn morning, I came across an empty office building. Surrounded by skyscrapers, this office building was cast in deep shadows; only the corners were lit by the late morning sun. The architecture added to the contrast. As I looked up, I felt my heart constricting under the weight of loss.
