#8 out of the series 'GAIA - Earth Mother'
Digital scan from a unique and handcrafted wet plate collodion photograph.
Throughout the centuries, modern mankind has placed itself above nature instead of being part of it. It’s my believe we must become one with nature again, and realise that our planet is literally vital to us. It is our task to cherish and protect it; we have the earth on a long-term loan from our great-grandchildren.
With this series, I want to show the beauty and at the same time vulnerability of our planet. To make us realise that there is no alternative and that it is our own responsibility to act in a more sustainable way. (ongoing – started in 2020)
AUTHOR
Fine Art pictorialist
In 2015 Gerjo came across the historical wet plate collodion process, at that moment his view on photography has clearly changed. Since then his work has been about personal subjects as well as social themes.
Creating unique images is not only a reflection on himself but also how he values our modern society.
Using the ancient wet plate collodion process he engraves the light into pure silver, just as it was done by photographers in the 19th century.
In the handmade images you can witness the soul- and feel the energy of the subject. Because of the slow process, any masquerade disappears by itself.
Although taken in the contemporary era, the pictures feel like they surpass reality, making them timeless and universal. Almost perfect through imperfection.
Since 2018 Gerjo is a member of the “Oostgelders Fotografen en Kunstenaars Collectief“.
