What initially drew me into the world of photography was the simplicity of the monotone imagery I was creating. Starting out in black and white, I felt the lack of color let the viewers focus, not only on the tone and light within the photograph, but also the form of the subject matter and the beauty it portrayed. The viewers see the world differently, in that the personality of the photograph comes alive. The artistic nature of the scene is also illuminated when viewed from a different perspective. Consequently, discovering art in everyday life.
From a young age, I was drawn to art in various forms, and my interest led to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in graphic design and photography from Radford University. It was at Radford that I discovered my passion for experimental photography using a variety of different formats and mediums. I grew particularly fond of monotone medium format photography, shooting with a Holga 120S, which I continue to use extensively today. The Hasselblad 500C is another favorite along with my Rolleiflex. Shooting in film gives me the unexpected, and the anticipation as to what might come.
Many of the black and white photographs in my portfolio were taken with the Holga 120S and Holga 120GCFN, all while quenching my passion for travelling. This afforded the opportunity to experiment with the camera's limited range, lighting, and quirkiness. As it turns out, the technical imperfections which occur while using this camera cast a "times gone by" tone to these pictures. The photographic results of using this camera serve as creative inspiration for future experimentation and progress in my field.
Currently I’m working as a Senior Graphic Designer for an internationally based company in Alexandria, VA.
