Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2021 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
During festival season in Varkala, Kerala, in southern India, there are many parades that include elephants, dancers, musicians and other costumed performers.
The parades are full of constant noise and bustle as they move through communities and local people set off fireworks and make offerings to the elephants.
This photo was taken during a quiet moment when mahout and elephant were able to pause and rest a moment before making their final entry into the local temple, where festivities would reach fever pitch.
