Suri Tribal girl. by Polly Fenton (Australia)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This girl is a member of the Suri Tribe of Southern Ethiopia. They are agro-pastoralists and are a proud tough people. As part of their rituals, the women have distinctive clay discs inserted into their bottom lips and ear lobes. It is an important part of their beautification and also assists in attracting larger dowries.
An elaborate part of their culture is scarification - the scars that decorate their bodies signify everything from beauty to adulthood or even just belonging. These scars range from delicate swirls of raised flesh to intricate patterns.
They also love painting their bodies with coloured ochres and wearing floral wreaths on their heads.
