ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Established in 1943, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge provides safe and protected wildlife habitat. With over 14,000 acres of shorefront, marshes, and woodlands, the refuge's location within one of North America's four Flyways, the Atlantic Flyway, makes it an essential resting spot for migratory birds.
Management of the island habitat allows many species of wildlife to flourish, with a concentration on the conservation and restoration of threatened and endangered species. Although neither threatened or endangered, the Great Egret is dependent on the shallow water marshes, estuaries, and tidal flats of the barrier islands for its survival.
