Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2021 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Michael, one of the next generation of super tusker elephants in Amboseli, stands between me and Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest free standing mountain in the world. There are less than 30 super tuskers left in the world, knowing that there are still animals alive like Michael that stand to take on that mantle is a beacon of optimism for a continent facing so many pressing conservation issues.
I spent three days following Michael, who was in musth at the time (an annual condition in which an elephants testosterone levels can be 30-50x their usual levels) making him less accepting of our presence in his space than he might usually have been.
Our patience paid off though as on the evening of the third day the clouds broke and Kilimanjaro appeared from the clouds, giving me the perfect chance to frame the future superstar of the region against a timeless backdrop.
