Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2021 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
A male weaver bird builds a nest for his mate. Over a period of a few days the weaver painstakingly brings thin leaves to build the next. It's hard work for such a small bird but he returns like clockwork to complete the task. These nests are situated on overhanging branches away from the easy reach of predators and as such also need to withstand wind and rain. Once the nest is completed the female weaver inspects it and if not satisfies destroys it and the male has to start from scratch. These nests can be seen across South Africa and I am fortunate enough to have a number of these nests in a large tree at my home.
