A little creep. by Joshua Smith (United Kingdom)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
A little creep. What kind of person stands in the darkness and just looks at the world alone? It’s how I feel most of the time. Nature teaches us everything. But look closer and you will see so much more, you won’t see what I see, you will see the truth, you will see my photograph. You will see that standing alone can be beautiful amidst the darkness. You will see hope, power and beautiful glory. It’s in nature but it was in you and me first.
As a wildlife photographer you are always at the mercy of two things predominantly. Your subject and the light. The challenge of wildlife photography is balancing these two areas with composition and a little bit of luck. I’m very proud of this photograph for many reasons. Firstly I feel this beautiful egret is a perfect candidate to model the emotional depth monochrome. Its heavenly white coat absorbs all surrounding light illuminating it from the darkness making the perfect contrast. Also I hoped that my new subject would humour me by allowing me to position myself and my camera which thankfully he did. I literally had to lie in a river to get this picture and on a winters day in London you can imagine my lack of enthusiasm for the rest of the day. Lighting was generally very bad due to the time of the year and the overcast sky. However I waited and hoped for just one ray of light to find my subject, just one. That’s the pay off for a photographer, there are so many variables to capture your vision and when they come together any photographer would agree that it is a gift and that’s the reward, every time.
AUTHOR
I would consider myself an amateur photographer with a growing passion for wildlife. Unfortunately I am unable to do this as my full time job but every chance I get I am exploring wildlife projects for the future. I am not just limited to wildlife - I photograph what interests me. I find there is a certain therapy in street photography so I fill my spare time with street when I am unable to shoot wildlife. I one day hope to be able to sell my work as fine art and bring the same inspiration to people that I feel when I not only submerse myself with nature but when I gaze upon the work of other inspirational photographers.
