Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2022 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
An image from the incredible slot canyons of the Navajo Nation. Formed when soft rock (typically Navajo Sandstone or limestone) and extreme climates collide and cause cracks which water seeps into with sediment. Over millions of years this erosion carves out narrow gorges that can be hundreds of feet tall and just a few feet wide.
Observed from the base of the canyon ever changing light from above filters through from different angles onto the smooth carved stratified rocks, creating incredible tones, patterns and a surreal tranquility
AUTHOR
G.B.Smiths photographic journey began over 40 years ago as a teenager learning the fundamentals of the craft in the darkroom and with large plate cameras.
Over time this was intertwined with a passion for travel and entrepreneurship which eventually led him down a path of exploration in countries and cultures throughout the world.
However, he still applies very traditional techniques to this digital process, such as all manual settings shot in medium format and enjoying the serenity and mindfulness that comes with long exposures and more simplistic “film centric” workflows.
Born in an industrial heartland many of his studies gravitate towards man-made structures and forms interacting with their natural habitat.
His International multi award-winning images have been published in a wide range of media and he is a lifelong member of the Royal Photographic Society.
“I seek perspectives that are less obvious and endeavor to engage the viewer through paths of light to provide a map of a given form that they may not ordinarily experience.
I like to simplify that journey by distilling an image down to its uncluttered form and essence, seeking to highlight the underlying patterns and flows of its elements. Therefore, I use black and white and mostly minimalist imagery, using less to communicate more.”
