ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Alongside Rhode Island Route 1A, Boston Neck Road, there is a pond of Sacred Lotus plants. Lotus plants are living fossils with origins stretching back millions of years. This hardy species was one of the few Northern Hemisphere plants that survived the ice age. The Sacred Lotus is originally from Asia and is now considered an invasive species in Rhode Island. Early in the 1980s, the Hamilton Cotton Mill was one of the first old mills to be converted to condominiums. The developers had the Sacred Lotus planted in the mill's old waterworks to provide color and roadside appeal for the project. Each summer, the Sacred Lotus blossoms attract tourists and locals alike to admire the elegance and beauty of these wonders of nature. The blooms also attract bees, nature's pollinators.
AUTHOR
Photography was an adolescent passion that led me to study at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, then eight years as a photographer in the U.S. Navy, and three years as a photographer/graphic artist at Stanford University. Ultimately taking photographs for a living tamped down my passion and I literally stopped taking photographs for over twenty years. Then I picked up an iPhone and rediscovered photography. It was all new, all digital, and the passion was rekindled. These images result from that re-engagement with the art and craft of photography.
