Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2022 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
July 2022, Mongolia
A horse dairy run by a young family. Every day they separate foals and mothers to obtain the milk, which is fermented. Fermented horse milk is a big part of the diet of a nomadic Mongol. They also invariably offer their visitors a cup when you are invited into their ger.
Throughout my journey through Central Asian Mongolia, my fascination for the relationship between humans and animals grew steadily. Lured by the Naadam festival, which was very worthwhile by the way, the daily scenes of the nomadic population are the ones that stick out. Their existence in steppe and desert areas relies heavily on the possession of their herd. Be it camels, horses, goats or sheep. During the summer months, they travel around the country in their ger to assist these herds.
AUTHOR
As a forty-something start up, artistically, several ponds were swum through. Painting, sculpture and photography all had their amateur periods. As a self-taught artist, an ever-growing archive was built up over the years. Travel photography is preferred. People and learning to understand their culture fascinates me enormously. Professionally, I share this knowledge as a teacher of ethics and aesthetics in a secondary school. I travel during the holidays. Often alone, sometimes in a small group. The camera is then often my friend to make contact with the local population.
Sometimes, people dream out loud about going away for an indefinite period of time. To leave school behind, and to have the courage to go where the heart beats.
Inspired by the abundance of excellent travel and cultural photographers and the limited material and technical knowledge, I try to find my way through competitions and the start-up of a portfolio with determination.
