ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Beijing is a city without tourists. Since 2020, the borders have been closed for overseas visitors, and at times, also domestic travel is limited. So living in Beijing in 2022 is a special experience. It comes with hardships (as not being in the position to visit family), but it also comes with privilege (as visiting The Forbidden City with hardly anybody else in it).
AUTHOR
After we moved to Japan and later on to China, I lost my ability to communicate. I lost my reading, talking, understanding skills when walking around in the overwhelming capital and had to discover new ways of analyzing what I see. I found that photography helped me talking about this city. It helped me express my fascination. It helped me overcome my hesitation to indulge myself into this city, which has an architecture so different from the old European cities I have been living in before, and yet shows it's beauty in small details. It helps to overcome the contradiction in living in the biggest city the world, sharing my space here with millions of others, yet feeling so safe and structured and peaceful. I think photography became my new means of communication.
