One of the true symbols of the nordic wilderness, is the crane. They are large, elegant birds, living a cryptic life hidden away from people. Virtually their only giveaway, is their characteristic trumpet-like calls, that bellow through the wild forests and mountain marshes of the North. On a misty morning in June, I was creeping silently through a wet marsh in eastern Norway. I knew the cranes were in the area, as I had observed them there before. With sharp senses and an extremely wary nature, the cranes would never let me close if I didn't keep a low profile. I carefully shuffled over to a boat lying on its side by the pond, and hid behind it. Time went by, and suddenly, I sensed movement between the trees on the other side of the marsh. Elongated legs carefully strutted over to an opening between the trees, and stopped. Time stood perfectly still. The fascinating creature opened its beak, and let out a series of calls, echoing across the valley. After a little pause, it silently moved off, engulfed by the thick fog.
