Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2022 (professional)
Risin and Kellingin from Tjørnuvík by Matthew Turner (United Kingdom)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
An atmospheric morning on the remote black sand beach at Tjørnuvík on Streymoy in the Faroe Islands, looking out towards the dramatic sea cliffs of Eiðiskollur towering above the legendary rock formations of Risin and Kellingin. Although from this perspective it appears that the distant headland is a continuation of the same coastline, it actually belongs to the neighbouring island of Eysturoy which is separated from this point by the bay of Eiðiflógvi. I visited this beach numerous times on my trip, but on this occasion I really liked how the water had carved the distinct edge in the sand as the river entered the bay, and the miniature sand stack in the foreground also formed a correlation with the distant silhouetted rock stacks.
