Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2022 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Santiago, Chile
Plaza Baquedano is a place steeped in history where the biggest Chilean celebrations and riots took place. Following the numerous demonstrations known as the 2019-2022 Chilean Protests of the Estallido Social movement (Social Outburst), protesters renamed this place Plaza de la Dignidad (Dignity Square). Despite the reduction in the size of the protests, Chileans show up every Friday evening to continue to assert their opinion, their values and to hope for change in the country's politics. Everyone has their own definition of a typical Friday night.
AUTHOR
My mom is a photographer. I grew up being her assistant. After almost 10 years, I realized that photography brought me nothing satisfying and caused me a lot of anxiety. I was afraid of missing my shots, of being disappointed with my work and of never being as good as “real” photographers. I focused on my studies, B.A in graphic design, then M.A. in interaction design and forgot about photography.
Recent events have progressively plunged me back into the photo world and led me to start taking contracts again, but in a different way. This time, I made a commitment to myself: I will only do photography that exploits my curiosity and my creativity while discovering human beings and documenting events.
