Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2022 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The project “Layers” consists of photos taken in Lviv, Ukraine in March 2022.
Seeing the devastation caused by the Russian invasion, members of Ukrainian local governments, parishes and non-governmental organizations, along with the civilian population, set about securing works of art against expected rocket attacks or bombings.
In a situation where it was not possible to transfer works of art to safe havens, the Ukrainians took temporary measures - makeshift cardboard covers, wrapping with cloth, metal curtains, covering with bags filled with sand.
In my project I focused on objects that, although obscured, still reveal the shape of the sculpture hidden underneath. The created precautions and security measures are not enough to protect against destruction in the actual bombing, but they clearly indicate and emphasize what is important and worth protecting for the Ukrainians.
