Street: Honorable Mention 2022 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
My latest series Gaze was shot during our family trip to Wuzhen - Hangzhou, China in early October 2022. It showcases the most recent development in my exploration of the relationship between the city and rural, nature and people, light and shadow. As with most people are passionate about photography, which for them is a language, an expression, a perspective of observing the world, which for me, is a philosphy for inspiring me to understand the world. Through his finely detailed black-and-white photographs, Zhenfeng reveals both placid and harmonious scenes from China, which still adhere to the Zero Covid Policy, three years after the beginning of COVID-19, presenting the audience with the social situation of conflict and contradiction under the surface of peace and calmness.
In critical theory, sociology, and psychoanalysis, the gaze, in the philosophical and figurative sense, is an individual's (or a group's) awareness and perception of other individuals, other groups, or oneself. The viewer is primarily the subject of “looking”, as well as the subject of power and desire, while the viewed is mostly the object of “being looked at”, as well as the object of power and desire.
The photographer gazes at the subject as if the viewer and viewed; that’s what God does, isn’t it?
