Architecture: 1st Place Winner 2023 (amateur)
Paddy's Wigwam by David Boam (United Kingdom)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Brutalist architecture is much maligned in the public view but there is a distinctive design ethos - raw concrete, exposed structural elements and some signature artistic flourishes. Brutalist architecture found a home in universities, places of worship, municipal and leisure facilities as well as corporate buildings. A competition to design the new Liverpool Metropolitan cathedral was held in 1959 and the present conical design by Sir Frederick Gibberd was the winner. Building was completed by 1965. The altar is situated in the centre of the structure and this arrangement is unique in the UK. It is a distinctive landmark for the city of Liverpool and is known in the area as "Paddy's Wigwam".
