Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2023 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I captured this image on a cold morning in November, 2022 in the Atchafalaya Basin. The Atchafalaya Basin is the largest wetland and swamp in the United States. Located in south central Louisiana, it is a combination of wetlands and river delta area where the Atchafalaya River and the Gulf of Mexico converge. Best known for its iconic cypress-tupelo swamps, this block of forest represents the largest remaining contiguous tract of coastal cypress in the United States. I had never been to the bayou before but had always heard about its beauty. To capture this image, I rowed for an hour in a kayak through the bayou and set-up my tripod in the swamp. I especially love how the treetops come together and form the letter “W” and then how this is reflected in the water. It was a challenging trip, especially photographing from a kayak and putting a tripod and camera in and out of the swamp without tipping the kayak over or dropping the camera into the water.
