Me frustro y me impido II (I get frustrated and prevent myself II ) by Kelvin Rodríguez (Puerto Rico)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This image is a self-portrait made in an exploratory and reflective session held in Puerto Rico in collaboration with the sculptor and friend Julián Collazo. As part of the start of the new year 2023, I began a process of introspection and discovery of issues that were relevant to my life. I used Collazo's ceramic masks as an essential element of the photographic series.
The images explore different aspects of my life as a young resident artist in the Caribbean, in the oldest colony in the world, Puerto Rico. The series tries to explore the continuous process of self-discovery about my personal life and my professional career, self-acceptance, my insecurities about my body image, and the social problems that my country has. With the insertion of objects relevant to the Caribbean such as bananas, pineapples and tropical plants, and other elements I tried to contextualize my place "On-site". Furthermore, with the insertion of the ceramic masks, I tried not only to generate certain feelings of discomfort but also to disguise the faces so that other elements of the photograph were more important than a mere portrait. Long-exposure image techniques allowed me to work on my shadows and take photos with the energy, movement, and restlessness that I feel when I think of myself right now. The use of painting with light in the composition allowed me to generate a sensation of a common thread between the images that border them. It is a graphic essay on site from the beginning of 2023.
