This image was created exactly as I had envisioned in my mind's eye - a dark, moody, dramatic image. Purposely underexposed to create the mood, the sun from daybreak reflecting off of the black vulture highlighted the bird just enough to allow for the rest of the image to be the appropriate level of darkness, but still retain subject detail. The icing on the cake was when the vulture activated it's nictitating membrane, covering it's eye in a ghoulish, translucent layer, adding to both the mystery and dark feel of the image.
AUTHOR
I’m a guy with a lot of passions. A volunteer firefighter, rescue technician and Pennsylvania State wildland firefighter, I’ve recently re-connected with a lifelong love of photography, nature and wildlife. While the rescue work appeals to one side of my personality, I’ve turned to photography for relaxation and a different sense of purpose.
I travel frequently, but I currently live with my wife and family outside of Philadelphia, where you can oftentimes find me hiking local trails with my equipment in tow.
