The sun was just about to rise when we found the Enkoyanai pride of the 2 black-mane lions. Olonyokie was feasting on a wildebeest kill while Olobor was resting nearby, keeping a strong eye on a lioness. A few jackals were circling around, waiting for a chance. During most of the following hour, Olonyokie had the carcass all to himself, taking naps in between meals while Olobor was busy mating with his lioness. Jackals had no success stealing anything from the lions but had kept their audience entertained with their persistence. About an hour after sunrise, Olobor finally decided that it was about time for breakfast. He walked toward Olonyokie, greeting his brother by rubbing his head. As Olobor turned toward the carcass, our eyes met briefly through my lens. He doesn’t have the friendliest face and somehow reminds me the bad uncle Scar of Simba in The Lion King. To my surprise, Olobor stood up and walked toward Olonyokie just a few minutes later. The shock, disagreement, and maybe a little fear on Olonyokie’s face signaled the following drama I was going to witness. Suddenly, both males had their mouths wide open. Olobor put his front legs on Olonyokie’s head. As mad as Olonyokie, he seemed to just try avoiding the attack from Olobor without fighting back. The entire conflict lasted for only 3 seconds. After that, Olonyokie walked far away from the carcass to the other side of the field.
