Conceptual: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
In the history of Western pictorial art, black people were belatedly represented, when it finally happened, their roles were ones that only history can testify.
As in the past, clothing is still important today, it distinguishes the rich from the poor, the politician from the common people, codifies professions, restores confidence, stigmatizes, and embellishes the shapes of the body.
From the 16th century the ruff was worn by nobles and bourgeois. Africans in slavery at the same time wore clothes that codified their places in society.
In this project I focus on a lingerie collar called “la fraise” in French, I want it worn by a young black woman, in order to normalize this status symbol for people of color.
It's a way of reimagining history through another filter, that of thinking that a simple fashion accessory such as a ruff might have made the difference.
AUTHOR
I'm a portrait photographer from Gabon and based in Paris France since 2004. Formerly a linguist, I obtained my master's degree in computational linguistics at Paris Sorbonne IV.
After a short period as a linguist, I accepted to have a mind more turned to artistic expression.
I decided to start photography: first as an assistant to a photographer friend.
Then I decided to start as an independent photographer in 2016.
Reflecting on the experience and value of human life is one of my biggest motivations. I also want to celebrate beauty in all its forms...I've been interested in art and wanted to be an artist since I was a child, I started photography cause I think that sometimes words are not enough to express a certain type of feeling. I think that a simple picture of a human being is much more powerful than words.
