Fine Art: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
Journey to the Bottom (and Back), Death Valley by Matt Sievers (Viet Nam)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
At 282 feet below sea level, Death Valley's Bad Water Basin is the lowest point in North America. When you think about the last couple of years we have had, many people have hit rock bottom. In one form or another. People you would never know or suspect. But many of these same people, while journeying to the bottom, have also begun the journey back. With friends. With family. Or the kindness of strangers. No matter how low you get (geographically or otherwise), you are not alone. And there is a way back. I feel this photo embodies that.
AUTHOR
Hey, I'm Matt. Hailing from the Pacific Northwest (USA) but based in Vietnam, I am a travel, documentary and fine art photographer focused on capturing the beauty of Vietnam, SE Asia, the US West and beyond.
More than the places you go, it is hopefully the people you meet along the way, calling each one home, that leaves the greatest impression. For me, that has always been the true gift of travel: people, and the authentic interactions and conversations you keep with you from those journeys.
It is often on those same travels, and through the same interactions and experiences with others, that I find myself imagining just how easily our lives could be switched—that my life could be theirs, and theirs mine? That idea remains a constant source of fascination to me, and a key driver of my creative interest and work.
