Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Where the sea ends and land begins is an unceasing ballet of rising and falling tides as they roll up upon sandy beach shores. At surf’s edge a white foam line is drawn. It’s as if the ocean itself is attempting to draw it’s own clear line and boundary as to where it reigns supreme, but it is ever changing. At once the sea claims the land, only to give it back a moment later. Black and white works particularly well for this photo. It allowed me to bring out dramatic details in the clouds in a way I could not in color. More importantly, I don't think I could have made the surf's edge its own dominant subject as I was able to here.
AUTHOR
Hey, I'm Matt. Hailing from the Pacific Northwest (USA) but based in Vietnam, I am a travel, documentary and fine art photographer focused on capturing the beauty of Vietnam, SE Asia, the US West and beyond.
More than the places you go, it is hopefully the people you meet along the way, calling each one home, that leaves the greatest impression. For me, that has always been the true gift of travel: people, and the authentic interactions and conversations you keep with you from those journeys.
It is often on those same travels, and through the same interactions and experiences with others, that I find myself imagining just how easily our lives could be switched—that my life could be theirs, and theirs mine? That idea remains a constant source of fascination to me, and a key driver of my creative interest and work.
