Photomanipulation: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This piece is part of my series, 'Monocle Vision.' I am visually impaired, with almost no vision in my left eye, experiencing a world distinct from those with unimpaired sight. I encounter phenomena such as 'confusion in depth perception,' where distant objects appear near, and vice versa, and 'hallucinations,' seeing things that aren’t present. My vision is so impaired that I often need to hear someone speak before correctly identifying their gender. The series aims to articulate my 'invisible perspective' through multiple interconnected artworks, encapsulating my visual experiences.
This specific piece, 'Where is the Signal?' was created in Barcelona, Spain, just before the global onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2020. The image depicts a pedestrian crossing devoid of the white lines common in Japanese crossings, providing an unfamiliar scenario. I captured the movement of the pedestrians and used multiple exposures to obscure the signal, disrupting the form and representing my impaired vision.
'Where is the Signal?' received the M84 Prize, the top award, at the 'Art Convergence' competition hosted by 'Art Gallery M84' in Ginza, Japan, in September 2020. The photograph showcases my perspective, highlighting the disruption of common visual elements and how my impaired vision influences my perception, offering viewers an insight into my unique world.
