Portrait: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Carol-Ann, dancer
I saw Carol-Ann in a performance. I was very much inspired by her.
I want to make portraits of people who touch me in a way. I don't want to make portraits of a certain category of people. The only criteria is that the person touches me in any way and that there is openness from both sides to really connect.
It could be an actor or dancer that I see on stage. It could be a homeless person I see on the street. It could be someone with whom I unexpectedly have an inspiring conversation.
I want to take the persons out of their environment and invite them to my studio to make a portrait of him there, so that it is purely about the person.
In my portraits I am looking for honesty and vulnerability. I believe that vulnerability makes us nicer human beings and that this makes the world a little more friendly and more understanding. People who show themselves vulnerable give the other the confidence that they themselves may be who they are.
I am most fascinated when I can see opposite qualities of a person at the same moment.
I find this exciting because people are complex. I hope that the portrait touches something of the viewer himself.
