Portrait: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
For many people, landfills are simply places to store discarded items. But for children and poor families in the highlands in Sapa town - Lao Cai - Vietnam, trash is a source of livelihood.
Picking up trash to make a living is a job for some people, among them the 13-year-old A Vung sisters. A Vung often searches for something valuable in a landfill on an arid plain about 1.5 km west of Sapa town every day. But this job has never been as challenging as it is now. The national economic crisis along with the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic have affected the amount of garbage, making the income of those who rely on landfills in Sapa also become more difficult.
