Street: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This is a hard choice to make as it looks like a landscape, but was taken off the highway near Michigan City, Indiana in 2021. This picture was taken on a "road trip" (my sixth or seventh) around America. I have one more "trip" to make to fill in the northwestern states to complete the journey I started in1989. This one is very sad as it was probably the sight of an automobile accident where someone lost their mother.
AUTHOR
I was born in San Diego, California on July 8, 1951. I enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard right after high
school serving in the military on a seagoing buoy tender in the South Pacific. On shore leave in Japan, I
bought my first camera - a Pentax Spotmatic. After my military tour, I became a professional Chef
leaving the camera in a box for the next 8 yrs. In 1980 I finally got the bug and took photography classes
at my local college getting exposed to black and white film, Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Gary
Winogrand and the Leica M4. I was hooked. Though-out the 1980’s I traveled frequently to Paris, Rome,
London and other cities in-between. My work grew as a ‘street photographer’ but I was not successful in
making a living at it, so I continued my career as a professional chef.
In 1990 I moved to Long Island, New York living and working there until 2022. After many years of
local newspaper work, photography workshops, documentary projects, travel, exhibitions, online
publications, podcast interviews, and two time guest speaker at ICP, I feel I have a a good body of work
that needs to be seen with a wider audience. Now retired from the restrains of the Culinary world, I am
fully dedicated to my photographic journey. I have never given up the dream.
