Street: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Dharavi is the largest slum in Mumbai. 40 years ago it was on the outskirts of the city, today it is in the middle of the 22 million metropolis and is threatened with demolition because real estate speculators want to use the site to build high-rise buildings there. However, the majority of the approximately 1 million residents want to stay there. Despite the apparent chaos and, from a Western perspective, catastrophic living conditions, they feel Dharavi is their home.
