Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Prior going to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, I have only seen Hippos in rivers or pools, however in the Mara, they like to wonder. After a week of torrential rain, the landscape was flooded. Luggers and pools overflowing, creating flash rivers. One morning on safari we crossed a road that had been transformed into a shallow river. To our surprise there was hippo relaxing in a deep pool to our right. He walked all around the jeep without a care in the world. He ended up back where we found him. The whole interaction lasted a little over 5 minutes. This truly was an incredible sighting as all the hippos I have seen wondering the grassland, which is a lot, have never got close and often walk away from the jeep immediately. That was the closet I have ever been to a hippo, and I can’t see that changing anytime soon.
