Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2023 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Tigers (Panthera Tigris) are a species which is under threat and on the 'Red List' under the endangered list of the IUCN. Poaching and illegal killing are the major threats to the species, to meet an illicit demand in high-value tiger body parts for the Oriental medicine market. Habitat loss and overhunting of tigers and their natural prey have also caused a reduction in distribution and, over the past century, tiger numbers have fallen in large numbers. India however, has been successful in their conservation efforts where numbers have grown over the past few years. As a photographer one can contribute in many ways; You can keep recording and sharing images of this beautiful cat on various media, you can do regular safaris and more. This helps keep a check on the species numbers and poachers away from such forests. One also needs to conserve the Tiger habitat and give them space that has always been theirs.
I was driving through the forests of Ranthambore, India in search of Tigers in their natural habitat when I came across this young male. After following him for a while I decided to wait and give him space to cross the path as that's what he probably wanted to do which is when this happened.
He walked down the hill to a lower point and came quite close to the vehicle and give me this stare which prompted me to pick up my camera and fire a few frames where he was looking directly into the lens.
I present to the Judges and jury the Bengal Tiger in Monochrome for this contest.
AUTHOR
Singapore based published photographer/author focusing on digital art, as well as portraiture, street, landscape and wildlife photography. I call myself a life long student of photography who does not like being categorized in any one genre. I always say photography is a learning process and one learns something new from everyone provided you are willing to look and listen.
I had a natural flair for photography since childhood, studied it in school, followed by self- learning and workshops over the last decade. More recently I has honed my skills through photography expeditions around the globe , which include major wildlife destinations in India, Sri Lanka and Africa. I am also a graduate from the New York Institute of Photography and an Olympus Visionary.
To me photography is an art - A true medium of self-expression. After my visits to Ladakh in northern India I was inspired to do my first coffee table book, “Swades; Ladakh: The Land of Splendour”, published by Knowledge World Publishers, in September 2010, to showcase the beauty of the region. To travel with me on one of my adventures, I can be contacted at ranjan@ranjan.photography.
I have thereafter been covered and published in various media in India and overseas - Sanctuary Asia Publication, Green Leaf, BanyoPran and Outdoor Photographer. Recently the WWF has also used his images in their campaigns. My works have been exhibited in Solo shows and also group shows at the World Photo Biennial held in Spain and Germany.
