ENTRY DESCRIPTION
During a trip to Chicago this Spring, I was captivated by the stunning architecture of that city, not just the monumental buildings but also the carefully thought-through architectural details. Chicago architecture has long fascinated photographers and the buildings have been photographed so many times and from so many different angles. To create a new and personal visual perspective of Chicago, I drew inspiration from the abstract art movements of the 20th Century. In this image I pay particular homage to the period of art termed Constructivism - this was the art of the Soviet Union after the revolution of 1917 and was rooted in the artistic depiction of utilitarian objects.
This particular image is of a particularly graceful interior staircase at the Art Institute of Chicago. In Photoshop, I took my original photo, overlayed it on another image of a concrete floor, and then added resized versions of my original image using different blending modes to create an intriguing and captivating take on this architectural feature.
AUTHOR
I have stopped full-time employment to concentrate on fine art photography. Photography has long been my passion and I am finally able to dedicate the time to explore my creative side.
Composition has always been a key element of my work, and I have studied the techniques of artists to draw the eye and mind of the viewer into an image.
For me, digital has unlocked the creative experience, making it much more immediate than before, but in a contradictory way, this also enables the photographic process to slow down. I can now take the time to evolve my perspective on a chosen subject in order to find the best representation of my artistic vision, exploring a particular subject from every angle, with different lenses and employing a variety of techniques.
I am particularly drawn to abstract representations, and the use of both long exposures and ICM to capture the essence of the subject that goes beyond a purely figurative representation. That said, though, I love to explore different genres and am always keen to push my artistic development in different directions.
