Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2024 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Eighteen inches of rain in Naperville, Illinois, USA, churned a river into a faraway tree line, making what would otherwise be innocent reflections of wood on water both dark and exceptionally dangerous.
AUTHOR
Shane Gericke produces bestselling novels and award-winning photos. He could have sung the blues given he's survived a knife attack, a lightning strike, the death of his wife, and a pulmonary embolism the size of the Buick. But given his singing, um, talent, the world is better off when he sticks to words and images.
Gericke (pronounced YER-key) began his 50-year adventure in words and images in high school, where he and pals Nikon and Underwood covered sports for the local weekly Herald. He went on to newspapers in DeKalb, Moline, and Joliet, Illinois, then landed at the mighty Chicago Sun-Times, where he finished out the newspaper portion of his career.
Then he moved into crime novels. His works include Blown Away, which made the Barnes & Noble and Amazon Kindle bestseller lists and which Romantic Times magazine named Debut Mystery of the Year, and Torn Apart, shortlisted for the international Thriller Award. He also became a landscape photographer honored by the international Monochrome Awards and National Wildlife Federation. He’s a founding member of International Thriller Writers and chaired its ThrillerFest literary conference in New York City.
After spending most of his life in the Chicago area, Gericke traded in his snowblower for the desert winds of Arizona, where he delights in mountains, cacti, and scorpions even as he wilts in the staggering heat. Learn more about him (and buy his books and photographs) through www.shanegericke.com
