Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2024 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
After several days of poor weather in Denali National Park this past summer, my plan to capture the grandeur of tallest mountain in the United States seemed unlikely. Things seemed to be changing for the better the afternoon of my departure, so I delayed my plans and decided to take a scenic flight over the park. Thick high cloud was fast dissipating as I caught my first glimpse of the soaring peaks of the Alaska Range.
Arguably the most spectacular section of the range is the Ruth Amphitheater, where the large Ruth glacier opens into a wide area encircled by the area's highest peaks. I caught sight of another plane taking off from the glacier with the low clouds providing a dramatic backdrop. I waited for the plane to enter a shaft of sunlight before capturing the moment with a fast shutter. The plane is dwarfed by the brooding landscape and required the sunbeam to stand out.
