We live in a culture that nominally allows freedom of speech and action, but as members of society, we must face the consequences of both. The moral code in the country I come from is strongly influenced by Catholicism and communism. The concept of indecency - whether in actions or expressed thoughts - often stems from unfounded traditions, and free expression is frequently met with ostracism and criticism.
In creating this image, I aimed to show the delicate balance between the psychological and the physical aspects of a person. The face, as part of the head - responsible for speech, thought, and identity - is not subjected to ostracism when revealed. In contrast, a woman's breasts, which biologically serve the purpose of feeding offspring, and thus sustaining the species, are socially rejected and tabooed. There is a vast space between biological nature and cultural norms, yet culture still clings to old restrictions and imposes numerous rules on women, under which lie suppressed desires - desires for freedom that must remain hidden. Often, this freedom is covered by something like white fabric, which depersonalizes or censors.
In my work, white symbolizes both purity and repression - the fabric covering the body becomes a metaphor for the constraints imposed by society. Freedom, although present beneath this covering, is suppressed and hidden under the rules that culture has sought to maintain for centuries.
