ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This is a portrait of my father-in-law William Singleton, more commonly known as Bill. It was taken in a studio in Yarraville, Victoria (Australia) using artificial light, shortly before his passing in 2021, aged 79.
Bill wasn't one for having his photo taken, but understanding that time was no longer on his side, he agreed to me capturing him for posterity. Given Bill's ill health at the time, it was a quick and expeditious shoot to keep him as comfortable as possible. And whilst there were more "happy" or "pleasant" images produced, this specific image captured the man I knew, as I knew him. Direct, questioning, cantankerous, stubborn, sometimes funny and family-oriented to his core.
AUTHOR
I am a registered nurse, with a long standing (30+ years) passion for photography. Portrait and sports photography are my key areas of interest.
With no formal artistic or photographic training to rely on, the last few years have seen me develop a relationship with a photography mentor and immersing myself in photography theory and practice more deeply, exploring the craft of creating raw and honest images through collaboration with the subjects.
To create my images I utilize a mirrorless DSLR camera, various lenses and both natural and artificial light sources. However the the tools of my trade are always secondary to the connection with my subject.
