ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Egrets have always been a favourite subject of mine to photograph regardless of their ubiquity. Playing around with compositions and light is made easy due to their stark white plumage and distinctive body shape.
As I was making my way out of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, the sky gave way and it began to pour. After scrambling for shelter, I noticed a pair of egrets foraging for prey in a shaded corner of the mangroves. I swapped out my telephoto lens for a short zoom and made my way to the edge of the bridge as the elements of the shot that I had envisioned began to materialise.
The pose of the larger egret looking back on its counterpart bears resemblance to us humans checking on each other when faced with challenges, akin to the pair of birds toughing it out against the harsh weather conditions. The textured leaves of the mangrove trees and the water ripples caused by the falling rain are accentuated by the absence of colour. The viewer’s eye is instantly drawn to the pair of egrets finding solace in each other in the vast expanse of their mangrove habitat.
