Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2024 (amateur)
Sparring Partners by MELISSA TELLER (United States)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
In February 2024 I spent several days photographing elephants in Kenya's Amboseli National Park. Shortly after sunrise I noticed these two subadult male elephants locking tusks and tussling with each other. It was clear that neither was trying to injure the other; they seemed to be practicing their sparring skills through a friendly game of tug-a-tusk. The light on the elephants was quite beautiful, so I waited until they moved into an area without background distractions and started shooting. Of the many images that I have from this series, I think this one really conveys their playfulness while still demonstrating just how strong these animals are (and how dangerous they could be to one another if engaged in a real fight).
