ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Western lowland gorillas live in the dense rainforests of the Congo Basin and its surroundings. Images of this species are much more difficult to obtain than those of mountain gorillas: their habituation takes much longer and they live in very inaccessible forest areas. During a gorilla trek in Loango National Park, I suddenly heard a rustling in the bushes right in front of me. Suddenly, a female gorilla lifted her head and looked me straight in the eye, an unforgettable moment in the depths of the rainforest.
AUTHOR
I am biologist and wildlife photographer with a passion for Africa. Every year I spend several weeks at the most amazing places searching for rare species and special photographic opportunities.
If I had to name just one place in Africa as a favorite it would probably be the Makuleke Concession in the far north of Kruger National Park. Although it covers only 5 % of the park it ist home to 95 % of its biodiversity. Moreover, the landscape ist amazing, from the flood plains of the mighty Limpopo to the gorges along the Luvuvuh River.
But Makuleke got a close runner up on my recent and very first trip to Gabon. Loango National Park is sometimes referred to as Africa's Last Eden. Even if this sounds like an invention of the tourism industry it could not be closer to reality. The park is covered with dense rain forests, open savannah area, lagunen, mangroves and other different habitat. And it harbors some of the rarest mammal species of the continent.
