Abstract: 3rd Place Winner 2024 (professional)
project "Null Island", work from the the series "Null Matter" by Anna Melnikova (Belarus)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Work from the project "Null Island" and from the series "Null Matter" this series is the primary basis, an attempt to find the maximum zero point of reference for the birth of the world. All works from the project are made using a cameraless method of obtaining an image - a photogram. With the help of a photogram, it is possible to obtain an image of non-existent objects and items, fixing only the shadow, the image is drawn with light, which makes it possible to create something new, something that does not exist in reality and on the surface of the paper.
Silver-gelatin print, photogram ( camera less obtaining an image).
The project "Null Island" includes several independent photographic series exploring "zero" not as a number, but as a metaphor for the end or the beginning, a starting point for something new, the project also infects the philosophical category of nothing - recording the absence, non-existence of a certain entity, or the denial of being in general. All the series within the project explore different aspects of the nature of "zero" and the philosophical interpretation of this entity in visual images. Something is happening in the world endlessly - political conflicts, wars, epidemics, natural disasters, my project is a kind of attempt to internally reset to zero, renew myself, leave the reality of existence and find myself outside the world, starting a new existence. Everything begins with zero and everything ends with it.
