Fine Art: Honorable Mention 2024 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
"History is a perpetual restart", quote attributed to Thucydides.
In a public park near my home town, 56 statues made of cement and cast iron represent the Way of the Cross of Christ in the Catholic religion. Commissioned by the brothers Claude and Pierre DELIN, they were installed from 1898.
As a child, it was a place where my grandparents would take me for a walk on Sundays. The statues larger than life, their cold whiteness and the cruelty of the scenes they represent scared me. I have kept a fascination for them and a question: how to look at these statues charged with religious symbolism and intentions that escape me?
As I was seeking with my camera for blood and flesh under the metal and cement, I realized that they are sad echoes of current events and the never-ending return of war. Cruel but also frightened soldiers, victims, mothers and wives in mourning... today as yesterday.
This Roman soldier is taken from a series of 12 photos on the same theme and process of mise en abîme.
AUTHOR
Photography first came to inspire and/ or accompany my poetic texts and paintings, starting in 2018.
During the Covid period, it became a vital part of my artistic research, especially as a breath of fresh air that I needed.
I use my camera as a brush or a pen, allowing myself to be guided by the subconscious and the enjoyment of the game.
I keep the photos that balance three levels: the symbolic, the imaginary, and the real.
